5 Basic Principles You Need to Know About Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is about making small changes to your website that helps increase the visibility of your website. When you’re making changes or creating your content for your website, it’s more important to keep your user in mind and not how your website ranks within search engines. Here are five basic principles that can help your SEO. 

1. Create a distinctive title page – One of the first things the user comes by is your title page, so you want to make sure it’s accurate and tells the user what they’re reading. Title pages are typically displayed in Google’s search results so having a title page that gives the user the most important information is critical. Remember to use brief titles that avoid using unneeded words or are too lengthy. 

2. Make your site easy to navigate – When you’re planning your website, think about how your user will navigate from the homepage to the content they’re looking for. Think about classifying products or specific content under related pages and think about using keywords that will help users move around your website. Avoid creating complex navigation links through your website and avoid breaking up your content so much that it takes multiple clicks to get to where the user wants. 

3. Content OptimizationThis is the singular most important aspect of good SEO. Having useful, compelling and interesting content will create higher SEO more than any other principle discussed. Write unique content and avoid copying similar content from other sources. Avoid dumping large amounts of text on topics without organization (e.g. paragraphs, subheadings, or titles). Instead of using unnecessary keywords to try and increase SEO, which can just annoy readers, use descriptive text that gives readers a good picture of what you’re website is about. 

4. SEO for Smart Phones – With a mobile world, configuring a website that is mobile is smart. Since mobile sites use a different format that desktop sites, it’s important to indexed correctly within search engines. Be sure to guide the user to the right site for whatever device they are on because if you haven’t configured your websites correctly, your site can disappear from search results altogether, which is also called cloaking. 

5. Website Promotion – Find ways to bring users into your website. Use social media to promote your product or webpage. Build partnerships with community sites that cover similar content as your website. Avoid spamming your website to users or purchasing links from other sites to try and increase traffic.
