They can provide a distinctive accent to any room as they are exceptionally diverse in design, style, pattern, color. As you must be aware that wall-to-wall carpeting can cause problems if family members have allergies as dust and dust mites take up residency in the bedroom carpeting making life miserable for the sufferer. And if you have synthetic carpet then it can cause air quality problem due to the offgassing of glues and backing used in many products. So this can be avoided by using rugs which are not wall to wall and can be placed strategically in between. There are various types to select from like wool which has great durability as the wool is very dense and the feel is nice. It harbors less dust mites unlike synthetics. There are many color options in wool rugs and being versatile it can fit anywhere. Wool rugs are available in new, reproduced, and vintage styles including Antique Persians or Orientals, vintage Danish rya rugs. They are bit higher side but can last a life time. Second option is cotton which are inexpensive and come in every color in the rainbow. Cotton, is less dense and strong, and it holds up under foot traffic a less well than plain wool, but they are very soft and often a more economical choice. And when the rug is small enough, it is easily washable, which can be a big advantage in kids' rooms or bathrooms. You can find rag rugs which are braided or woven for a simple, cottage effect in traditional Early American and Scandinavian-style designs. The next option is silk which is stronger than steel and comes in maximum variety of colors. Sometimes you will find them in a combination with cotton or wool. Silk rugs are light in weights and are extremely light weight and unique texture to the party, which makes it excellent for decorating. Silk is often used in expensive Oriental and Persian area rugs because it lends itself to very delicate, intricate patterns and designs. Silks are usually high quality and expensive and requires special care. They are more water resistant when combined with wool. Silk looks very beautiful and can make an impact in any room if used for beauty. Like Master or guest bedrooms you can use silk rugs. Next option is Nylon which is good in resisting stains and it also comes in variety of colors and style, it has quite durable and is at less expensive. Next option is seagrass which is the least expensive; water-resistant, soft, naturally stain resistant, and durable and can be used in high traffic areas. They come in natural shades of brown and environment friendly and hypoallergenic. Other option is Jute which comes in a natural tan color, but it can be bleached or dyed. It has relatively low cost, fire resistant, strong, durable, and because it comes from an easily grown plant, very sustainable. And last but not least is sisal which is environmentally friendly, is naturally anti-static and doesn’t trap dust, very easy to clean, and you only have to vacuum them every once in awhile unless they are in a very heavily trafficked area. Top tips

Modular sofa
A corner sofa, with a low arm, acts as a divider between the living and dining areas without blocking the view.
Co-ordinating fabrics
Tie the two areas together by using the same fabrics to make napkins and runners for the table, and cushions for the sofa and chairs.
Spot lighting
Hanging a low-level pendant light over the table helps to define the dining area of the room.

Living room and hallway

A living room that's also a hallway, can be stylish and welcoming. Come in, hang your coat on the understairs rack, and snuggle down in the seating area, which is painted a warm ochre to make it the focus of the space.

Top tips

Door curtain
Use a curtain, made from a pretty floral fabric, to conceal the front door. It will keep out draughts, and add colour to the scheme, too.
Cream-painted stairway area
Painting the understairs, banister and stairwell the same creamy white, separates them visually from the ochre seating area.

Family living room

Think practical and stylish: hard-wearing flooring, washable and wipe-down upholstery and loads of storage, combined with bold blue walls, pretty fabrics and a luxurious rug.

Top tips

Wall-to-wall shelving
Run shelves right across the chimney breast and alcoves - the narrow middle section is ideal for pictures.
Versatile table
A compact design, made from glass and chrome, slots around the sofa arm - perfect for your laptop, games console or TV dinner.
Built-in storage
Even a shallow alcove can be used for storage - you can fit slim cupboards, with narrow shelves inside, for storing CDs and DVDs.

Does your living room have to cope with through-traffic, double as a dining room or accommodate lots of clutter? You don't have to slavishly reproduce an authentic period look in a Victorian house, but try to work in sympathy with the basic architecture.

• Is it right for this room?
For example, don't choose a dark, dramatic look for a small room, or it will feel even smaller. Avoid blues or greys in cold rooms, choose warmer tones like peach or yellow.

• Will it date?
You may not care, if you plan to redecorate the room within a year or so, but for big investments like a kitchen or bathroom, choose a look that won't date too quickly. Plain styles for kitchens and white suites for bathrooms have the longest style life.

• Is it practical?
If you have small children or pets, think about safety – no slippery floors or sharp corners, and for furnishings choose darker colours that won't show the wear and tear so easily.

Answer these questions to create a look you can live with
<website>http://www.housetohome.co.uk/articles/advice/planning/Choose_a_look_120988.html?subslug=</website>

<added>1219137221</added>

Guide to managing your laundry

Twenty-four programmes on the washing machine, six mysterious symbols on your T-shirt, washing powders, liquids, balls ? when did laundry get so complicated? Here's how to make it simple again

7 tips for getting the perfect wash

1. Get clothes wash-ready. Do up bra straps to stop the catches snagging other clothes; zip up zips; empty pockets and use net bags for delicates.

2. Read the labels. The tags on most items of clothing tell you how to wash and dry for best results (see our guide overleaf). Read and obey!

3. Use your machine properly It's tempting to wash everything at 40ºC, but for best results, use the correct wash programme for different clothes items.

4. Pre-treat stains. If clothes are stained, make sure you apply a stain remover before you wash, otherwise the stains may set.

5. Use the right amount of detergent. Too little won't get everything clean, but too much will leave a residue on your clothing. The correct amount varies depending on how hard your water is, how dirty the washing, whether you're using powder or liquid and the size of your washing machine. If in doubt, follow the guidelines on the packaging.

6. Don't cut corners. Machine-washing items that should be hand-washed or dry-cleaned just to save time will only end in tears and ruined clothes.

7. Clean your machine. Every few months add a cup of white wine vinegar to the detergent dispenser and put the empty machine on a 95ºC wash to clean it.

Top tips

Don't use fabric softener on every item you wash. Softeners and conditioners coat clothing fibres, so shouldn't be used on towels as they make them less absorbent. When they're used on clothing, however, conditioners make ironing easier.

Pick the right detergent

Biological ('bio') detergent contains cleaning enzymes to improve wash performance at lower temperatures, plus bleach and brightening agents. This is the harshest detergent – use it for whites and lights, but not if you have sensitive skin or on dark colours as it will cause them to fade.

Non-biological ('non-bio') detergent has had most of the enzymes removed, and is ideal for sensitive and young skins. But, with the enzymes gone, results are not as good as with a bio detergent.

Colour care detergent contains enzymes to shift dirt but the bleach activator has been removed, so it gives a good wash, but not quite as good as a bio. Use it on items where you don't want the colour to fade.

Silk and wool detergent has no enzymes, bleach or brightening agents to give a less effective but very gentle wash that's better for delicates.

Ecological detergents (available as bio and non-bio) use non-synthetic, plant-based ingredients. One manufacturer, Ecover, says clothes need freshening up rather than a good clean. When cleaning is important, it advises using its oxygen bleach. Ecological detergents cost more, but all the ingredients are bio-degradable.

Powder vs liquid? Traditional vs tablets?

Powder
This is poured into the machine's detergent dispenser. Tends to be a bit better on muddy marks. You may get a residue left in the dispenser or on clothes.

Tablets
These are put in a net that goes inside the machine. No need for messy measuring, plus Persil have a new tablet that includes a stain remover to tackle grubby clothes. Can leave a visible residue inside the drum.

Liquid
This is poured into a dosing ball and put inside the machine. It washes all away, leaving no residue. If the ball gets tangled up in clothes, the liquid may not be distributed evenly.

Liquid gel sachets
These are used inside the machine. Leave no residue. Unlike tablets, you don't need a net. More costly: Persil Non-Bio Capsules cost £5.29 for 20 washes but Persil Liquigel Bottle is just £3.25 for 20 washes.

What do laundry labels mean?

Care symbols can be confusing, so here's our cut-out-and-keep guide to help you understand them Dry your washing correctly

Dry outside where possible to give the freshest results, but bring the washing in and fold it neatly before it overdries for easier ironing.

Hang the washing line out of direct sunlight – that way, you'll stop your clothes from fading.

Peg out properly when hanging out clothes. Shirts should be pegged by the tail, T-shirts by the hem, dresses by the shoulders, trousers and straight skirts by the waistband (fuller skirts by the hem), and socks by the toe.

Invest in a dryer – use a tumble or washer-dryer instead of an airer if possible (turn to page 154 for our selection of the best washer-dryers). An airer takes up a lot of space, looks unsightly and, unless your washing dries quickly, can smell like an old umbrella.

Check the temperature when you tumble dry (see the clothes labels for the correct setting). As a rule, high temperatures are for cotton, denim and linen; cooler temperatures are for synthetics, lingerie and cotton knits.

Never overfill your dryer – you need enough space for the hot air to circulate and for clothes to tumble.

Clean the lint filter after every use or fluff will build up, making it less efficient. Too much lint in your dryer can also be a fire hazard.

Don't over-dry if you intend to iron your washing straight away. There should be the slightest hint of dampness to make it easier to iron. Over-drying also stiffens fabric. Try to hang or fold items as soon as possible after washing to reduce creases.

Your essential kit

1. Housekeeper's Collection Storage Box, £20, John Lewis – ideal for keeping your washing equipment all in one place.

2. Comfort Pure Fabric Softener, £1.26 for 750ml – use to condition clothes for easier ironing.

3. Oxi Clean Powder, £3.99 for 500g – put a scoop in with your laundry to tackle stubborn stains.

4. Ariel Non-Bio Liquitabs, about £2.75 for 10 – quick and easy to use, these contain all you need to wash an average load and won't leave behind any residue.

5.Lavender Linen Spray, £12 for 115ml, The White Company – will give clothes a fresh scent and make light work of ironing.

6. Dryer Balls, £9.95 for two, Lakeland – these help soften clothes as the spikes massage the textile fibres while in your dryer.

7. Soft Grip Clothes Pegs, £5 for 24, Lakeland – great for hanging out even delicate items.

How to manage your laundry quickly and easily
<website>http://www.housetohome.co.uk/articles/advice/care_guides/How_to_care_for_your_laundry_121163.html?subslug=</website>

<added>1219137093</added>

7 beautiful ways to dress windows

Use a wave heading

Soft waves of fabric create a smart but simple finish that's easy on the eye. A wide Tempo heading pleat makes curtains fall in soft, regular waves, so they will always look just right. Team it with a sleek, modern suspension rail that the curtains glide below and let the curtains sit flush with the floor so they'll look neat open or closed.

Stylist's tips A cut-velvet pattern adds a luxurious edge to this otherwise pared-down window treatment.

Need to dress your window for privacy and prettiness? A double pole lets you do both

A clever double pole design means you can hang both a sheer and a curtain around the bay window, but draw them independently. Brackets normally get in the way of curtain rings being pulled around a bay, but this design uses passing rings that allow the curtains to be drawn all the way round. A standard heading tape left ungathered on both curtains creates a soft, informal effect. Keep the sheers sill-length for a neat finish and go for floor-length curtains to create real impact in a bay.

Stylist's tips Team a bold, modern, floral curtain fabric with a floral patterned voile for a modern take on a curtain and sheer.

Where to buy Curtains made in Samara J515F-01, £37 per metre, Jane Churchill. Voile curtains made in Sophia 074, £48 per metre, Harlequin. Fusion double curtain rail, custom-made by the Bradley Collection.

A neat, modern pelmet creates a smart, fuss-free finish in a large bay window

For a contemporary take on a traditional curtain finish, use a small pelmet that picks up one of the colours in the curtains. It gives a sophisticated finish to a bay window and means you can use a plain curtain track around the bay as it will be concealed by the pelmet. Team it with a curtain in a pinch pleat heading that creates regular gathers for an equally understated effect. A pair of holdbacks that match the pelmet is all that's needed when you want to draw the curtains back and let in maximum light.

Stylist's tips For a hotel-chic window treatment like this, choose striped satin for a tailored look and give the pelmet a touch of decorative detail with a fringe trim.

Where to buy Curtains made in Sapphira 8515, £48 per metre, Harlequin. Pelmet and holdbacks made in Jem silk in Maroon 33, £19.90 per metre, Linwood. Ruche trim JM38E-02, £27 per metre, Jane Churchill.

Dress up your bay window with four sweeping curtains for an elegant finish

A pair of curtains hung centrally, plus a curtain to each side of the bay, makes an opulent alternative to a single pair of curtains. A flat-faced pole in a wood-effect and metal finish is a feature in itself – use a suspension-rail system so that the fabric gathers neatly below the pole and doesn't hide it. Position a holdback for each curtain two-thirds of the way up the window, so the curtains can be draped across the top part of the window when drawn open. Allow plenty of length on the curtains so they pool on the floor to complete the lavish look.

Stylist's tips Repeating the colour of the curtain pole in the fabric's trim pulls the whole look together.

Team blinds for controlling the light with dress curtains that frame the bay

Roll-up blinds are a fuss-free way to dress a bay. Go for a bold pattern that can be seen in all its detail and choose a complementary plain fabric for the back of the blinds so your window looks good from outside, too. Combine with an attractive pole around the bay and narrow dress curtains at either side. These provide a soft framing effect for the window, but can't be drawn closed. Snap-together rivets attach the curtain fabric to the pole for a neat, modern finish that doesn't require heading tape.

Stylist's tips Choose the same fabric for the dress curtains and the back of the blinds, as this will be on show when you roll them up during the day.

Where to buy Curtains and blind backs made in Venice Grass, £27.75 per metre, Villa Nova. Blinds made in Osaka 658-26102, £14 per metre, John Lewis.

Create an eye-catching effect for a plain window with a vivid leading edge

A curtain with a leading edge is a real show stopper. A contrasting fabric from the back of the curtain is continued to the front, and simple holdbacks allow even more of it to be on show when the curtains are open. Use a simple pencil pleat and an unfussy pole to keep all the attention on the curtains themselves. You can enhance the effect of this stunning treatment by choosing a pole that's slightly wider than the window, which tricks the eye into thinking that the window is bigger than it really is and allows you to hold the curtains back without blocking light.

Stylist's tips A satin-finish fabric for the leading edge gives it even more attention-grabbing shimmer. I

Mix panels of plain and pictorial fabric for a window that's a real work of art

A fabric with a pretty illustration is a great way to dress up a window with an uninspiring view. Use plain fabric for two-thirds of the length, with the panelled pattern on the lower third. Create visual separation between the two with a ribbon braid, finishing off with a trim below. An eyelet heading on a pole means the fabric won't fold up, so the illustration can be seen clearly. Keep the curtains to sill height so they hang properly, draw easily and don't block heat from the radiator.

Stylist's tips Choose a plain fabric in a paler contrasting colour and trim the join to make the print stand out.

Moreover, in both modern and period homes, the various vinyl and laminated versions can be an excellent and practical choice.

Wooden flooring is under constant technical development; the latest ranges have tough, long-lasting finishes and are straightforward to install. There's no need to worry about gaps between boards; the click-and-lock systems mean the task can be handled by an experienced DIY-er, although most suppliers will also offer an installation service.

All types of wooden flooring can be laid over practically any sub-floor, including floorboards, concrete, old tiles or a boarded surface, as long as the surface is sound, dry and flat. Reclaimed timber flooring, however, is a slightly different proposition as it won't be neatly cut to size and it's also difficult to judge what it will look like once it's been finished. Take advice from the supplier on how much to buy and which finish to choose, and always ensure that you've bought enough – it will be tiresome to track down similar boards elsewhere. It's also worth experimenting with cleaning and/or finishes on a spare board before installation.

As it is an integral part of the room and colour scheme, you should choose your timber floor at the start of the redecoration or refurbishment project. According to how light or dark the floor is, it can affect how paint and paper colours appear. Although some timber flooring, such as parquet, solid hardwood and reclaimed boards, can be darkened or lightened by sanding down and re-varnishing, it's not a job you are likely to want to do very often.

Types of timber flooring

Solid Wood
Made from the named timbers, these are solid all the way through. Some types are suitable for installation as the structural floor without needing a sub-floor underneath.

Reclaimed Timber
This can be bought as bundles of planks, boards or panels from reclamation and salvage yards, or as whole floors from timber-flooring specialists. Prior to installation reclaimed timber flooring can look very uninspiring. Once it's laid, however, it can look incredible.

Multi-Layered or Engineered
A plywood or veneered base, built up with several layers of criss-crossed hard or softwood boards, and topped with a layer of the named timber. The construction of this flooring gives it strength and stability, so it's a good alternative to solid-wood flooring.

Laminate
Made by producing an image of wood on a layer of plastic, which is laminated to a board backing. Top-quality versions have convincing textured finishes, and are hardwearing and tough. Inexpensive DIY-store versions may look flat and lifeless, and the "wood" finish may flake or chip at the edges of the boards.

Vinyl
Vinyl flooring is widely available in timber patterns. Luxury sheet vinyl can be a good choice in the kitchen or bathroom, and is considerably cheaper than solid wood. Vinyl plank or block flooring feels harder underfoot but, as each floor is individually designed, it always needs to be professionally laid.

Suitability
• Timber flooring can be noisy, especially in upstairs rooms; use rugs to deaden the sound of footsteps in busy areas, and always use the insulation suggested by the installers.
• Reclaimed timber flooring is usually well-worn and is tough enough for most living areas, although you should avoid bathrooms and kitchens.
• Solid or engineered wood flooring is suitable for living rooms, dining rooms, halls and bedrooms.
• Laminates are suitable for living areas and bedrooms but avoid rooms with water, as seepage between the joins can cause planks to swell or discolour.
• Vinyl look-alikes are good choices for bathrooms and kitchens, conservatories and utility rooms, as well as for main living areas.

Styles and grades

Timber flooring comes as planks (also known as boards), each of which can be made up of a number of strips. A plank with a three-strip design has three narrow strips running the length of the plank. The floor will have a random strip pattern when laid. Planks can vary in thickness, each depth being more suitable for certain bases. For example, the thickest planks, at about 22 mm, can be laid over joists as structural floorboards, while thinner planks, at about 7 mm to 15 mm thick are laid as overlay floors on to an existing smooth, dry sub-floor.

The surface finish of timber flooring is also given a grading. Premium or select grades are smooth, uniform and knot-free. Moving down the scale, grades referred to as "natural" or "rustic" are less uniform and, in many cases, more realistic and appealing. Only order your flooring when you have seen a sample of the exact plank – strip, colour, grade and finish.

Wooden Floors and the Environment
Timber flooring is generally acknowledged to be ecologically sound, providing it is produced using timber from sustainable forests. Reputable stores will only deal with manufacturers who use wood from certified sources. In the UK, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme is widely recognised and includes a certified chain that tracks timber through every stage, from forest to retailer. For further details, visit fsc-uk.info or call (01686) 413916.

Trends
There's currently a move away from narrow, pale woods, towards darker wood and reclaimed flooring. Oak is a perennial favourite, possibly due to its middle-range colour options, and the fact that it blends with virtually any colour scheme or style.

Extra-wide boards and planks (up to 76 cm wide in some cases) are becoming favourites too, many with distressed finishes such as "smoked" effects. For laminate flooring, choose designs with V-grooves along the long and short edges of the boards, and with textured surfaces, which look far more realistic than completely smooth surfaces.

Longevity and Upkeep

Solid-hardwood flooring is incredibly hard-wearing, and will last for many years. It can be sanded down and resurfaced every five to seven years. Engineered flooring will normally withstand one or two sandings, but no more than that. Real wood flooring will age gracefully, and the signs of wear and tear are an acceptable feature – as timber furniture ages and picks up the occasional dent or mark, so will timber flooring. Laminate flooring cannot be sanded when chipped, damaged or scratched, although the best quality ones are very hardwearing and scratch resistant in the first place.

Save timber floors from getting scratched by grit, dust and dirt by regularly sweeping with a soft brush or vacuuming them. Also mop the floor once a week or so with a well-wrung mop. A detergent can be added to the water, depending on whether the floor has a hard (varnished or lacquered) or soft (waxed or oiled) finish. Hard finishes provide a protective barrier for the wood, and offer a high level of protection, but are more difficult to repair if damaged.

A serious scratch or dent in a lacquered finish usually means the whole floor has to be sanded back and then relacquered or revarnished. Waxed or oiled finishes are softer, and protect the surface by sinking into the wood itself. They're most successful if you want to nurture an aged, worn look for your wooden floor. If waxed or oiled woods get damaged, the whole florr will not need to be redone, as it is possible to sand back and re-wax or re-oil an isolated area.

Vinyl wood-look flooring is easy to clean; regular sweeping and mopping is all it needs, and scuff marks can be removed by applying a little white spirit using a soft cloth.

Egypt Real is Europe's leading specialist in sales of property in the region, with offices in the main hotspots of Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam.

No prior knowledge of international real estate is needed in order to get involved in this business - if you can find the leads, we will take care of the sales from then. And very few serious buyers decide not to buy once they understand the tremendous investment opportunities offered by property in the region.

This scheme will be of particular interest to anyone based in Europe outside the UK as there is very little competition in the main European markets other than the UK. Good results can also be expected from the English speaking market as British are currently the main buyers, but competition for them is more intense.

Commission on each sale is 5% - meaning that an average sale is worth in the region of EUR1500-2000 (GBP1250-1750).

Please note that, unlike most affiliate schemes, the process cannot be fully automated - you will need to enter email correspondence with your clients. The results, however, are certainly worth it as other affiliates are earning over EUR5000 a month for two hours work per day.

Earn 5% on all sales of apartments and villas in the world's fastest growing real estate market
<website>http://www.egypt-real.com</website><download>http://www.egypt-real.com/en/franchise.htm</download>

<added>1218066758</added>

<keywords>real estate property international overseas foreign egypt red sea riviera</keywords><affiliate_url>http://www.egypt-real.com/en/franchise.htm</affiliate_url><affiliate_tracking>N/A</affiliate_tracking><tier_1>5%</tier_1><tier_2>0%</tier_2>

The Paint Store

ThePaintStore.com was founded in 2006, with over 30 years of experience.
